When Solomon (Sol) graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 2021 with a degree in Quantity Surveying, he wasn’t entirely sure where his career would take him. But an unexpected opportunity set him on a path that would see him grow into a senior role at one of the region’s fastest-growing employers, Warmer Energy Solutions.
Getting started with Warmer
While still studying, Sol’s dad introduced him to Warmer’s CEO, Charlie Mullan who invited Sol to join the business one or two days a week, supporting the business with admin and finance whilst gaining hand-on experience that complemented his academic studies.
He quickly embraced the opportunity, and on graduating, stepped into a full-time role as Operations Coordinator, liaising with suppliers and manufacturers to support Warmer to deliver retrofits to homes across the UK.
Learning, progressing, leading
From the start, Warmer invested in Sol’s development. He undertook two formal training courses and became a qualified Domestic Energy Assessor and Retrofit Coordinator, both highly sought-after roles in the retrofit industry.
His responsibilities expanded in line with his growing expertise. First promoted to Senior Project Coordinator, he then advanced to Design Team Leader where he is now overseeing a team of three specialists. Together, they produce the technical heating and retrofit system designs that ensure every retrofit installation is not only compliant but delivers real comfort and efficiency for the residents.
“I’m proud of becoming Design Team Leader, and of the new skills that I’ve developed” says Sol. “It shows the trust Warmer has in me and the opportunities available for people who want to grow.”
Making a difference across the UK
For Sol, the impact of retrofit work is deeply rewarding. He has helped households from just 10 minutes from his Liverpool home to as far afield as southern England and northern Scotland.
“These projects benefit the lives of everyone they touch. We’re helping people reduce carbon and enjoy warmer, more comfortable homes. We work with families who have sometimes had poor or non-exisitant heating previously, and now they’re warm and able to live comfortably in their homes. It might sound like an exageration, but I’ve had customers contact me after the retorfit to say that the works have been life changing. It’s humbling, but a real feel-good moment knowing that I’m part of a company that is having such a great impact on people’s lives.”
A supportive local employer
Despite its national reach, Warmer has deep roots in Liverpool, with headquarters at Estuary Business Park, Speke. Sol describes the culture as “supportive and collegiate,” where colleagues lift each other up to deliver great things for clients.
Warmer also puts emphasis on giving back locally. The company is currently supporting Sam’s Diamonds Cancer Support, a Widnes-based charity helping families through their cancer journey.
“Though we work nationally, we’re a close-knit group here in Merseyside. Warmer is a great place for graduates or job-seekers who want to build a career in a sector that’s growing and rewarding.”
Looking ahead
With the government committing £13 billion to retrofit programmes nationwide, Sol sees long-term opportunity in the industry.
“I want to keep growing and learning new skills. This sector is secure, expanding, and full of potential. And it’s exciting to know the work we do contributes to lower carbon emissions and helps people live more comfortably. That’s something I’d recommend anyone to be part of.”
